Corporate & Social Responsibility

Alpha are proud of our commitment to be a socially and ethically responsible company.

Alpha have worked with Heart of the City to implement a Corporate & Social Responsibility (“CSR”) policy to maximise the benefits and minimise the downsides of our economic, social and environmental impact.

Heart of the City is a registered charity launched by Lord George and The Lord Mayor of the City of London to provide free support for businesses wanting to develop or expand their existing CSR programme.

Minimising our impact on the environment

  • Recycling where possible

We have introduced recycling facilities for all office waste, including confidential waste, printer cartridges, electronics, cardboard, plastic, glass, paper and packaging, and have implemented a process to monitor and track waste and recycling figures.

To reduce our use of disposable coffee cups, we have provided ‘KeepCups’ for the office.

  • Reducing our use of paper

We use recycled paper for much of our printed materials and encourage staff to print double-sided in black & white ink whenever possible. We actively monitor our paper usage to ensure that wastage is kept to a minimum.

  • Saving electricity

We encourage staff to save electricity by turning off air conditioning, equipment and lights when they are not in use. We do not leave any lights on in the office out of hours.

Promoting a good work / life balance

  • Encouraging flexible working patterns

Staff are encouraged to work from home when possible and Alpha will aim to accommodate flexible working arrangements for staff. Staff are actively encouraged to be open about time constraints and workload, to ensure they feel able to voice concerns if the demands placed on them are too great.

  • Cycle to work scheme

Alpha promote the government’s ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme to allow employees to set up a salary sacrifice for bikes and commuting equipment completely tax free.

  • Maternity and paternity Leave

Alpha exercises a fair and generous shared parental pay and shared parental leave policy.

Working with ethical suppliers and/or local businesses

We use Fair Trade products wherever possible.

Enabling staff to participate in voluntary charitable activities

  • Encouraging charitable activity

We are particularly proud of our voluntary charitable work, which has been a long-standing part of the company’s ethos since we were founded.

In 2016 we formalised this through our ‘Charity of the Year’ programme, focusing our support on one charity nominated and chosen by the whole company. Our inaugural Charity of the Year was AfriKids which helps vulnerable children and their families in isolated rural communities in northern Ghana. Over the course of 2016, we raised over £38,000 for AfriKids through various events including the 3 Peaks Challenge in the UK, the ING Marathon in Luxembourg and sponsored runs in Paris. This culminated in 5 employees visiting northern Ghana to see AfriKids’ work first-hand.

For 2017, we have partnered with the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, a UK-based, globally linked child protection charity that focuses on the prevention of child sexual abuse. As well as supporting the Foundation’s ‘Yours Faithfully’ fundraising campaign with creativity and fresh ideas, this year we are also formalising how we can support their business operations through pro bono consultancy support. We hope this will enable us to leverage our in-house skills and expertise to improve the Foundation’s level of service delivery, increase our engagement and help us create a lasting impact at the charity. Alpha also offers all employees the ability to make tax-efficient donations to charity through Payroll Giving.

  • Supporting our local community

Alpha has also partnered with the Social Mobility Foundation, which aims to improve the social mobility of young people from low-income backgrounds. 25 Alpha UK staff of all levels currently volunteer as mentors to 16-18 year-olds who are looking to go to university and start work in the City but have no professionals in their immediate network, advising on topics such as career options, CV writing and university applications.

Providing a framework for Charitable Fundraising and Payroll Giving

  • Encouraging use of the Give-As-You-Earn scheme

In the UK, we provide the ability for staff to donate to charities on a regular or one-off basis using the give-as-you-earn scheme to allow charitable donations to be given directly from gross salary; Alpha also donates the National Insurance (13.8%) on any money donated.

Diversity and Inclusion (D&I)

Alpha is fully supportive of all aspects of diversity and inclusion.

Women at Alpha

As a member of London’s 30% club, Alpha is committed to improving the presence of women within senior management positions both in asset management and consulting.

We support strong networking across our clients and consulting partners to engage in informal mentoring opportunities and to encourage all our colleagues to ‘Lean In’ to the gender debate.

Pride at Alpha

Alpha’s LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans) committee and network group, Pride in Alpha, partners with Stonewall to represent Alpha’s LBGT colleagues and allies.

We have a packed social calendar focusing on a wide spectrum of LGBT issues, and focus on driving forward the LGBT agenda across all areas of the business, raising awareness of the LGBT community and supporting our colleagues.

Wellbeing at Alpha

Alpha Wellbeing is our most recent addition to the Diversity and Inclusion sub-committees. The initiative focuses on proactively encouraging wellbeing across the business, ensuring Alpha employees are empowered to be the best they can be both mentally and physically.

This year, the group is also placing a focus on mental health within the workplace, encouraging open debate on a topic often regarded as taboo, to ensure our colleagues feel supported at all stages of their career.

Cultural Diversity at Alpha

Cultural diversity at Alpha is a committee and network group which focusses on creating an environment in which all people, of all backgrounds, religions and ethnicities can thrive.

We regularly host awareness and educational events such as ‘unconscious bias training’ for all interviewees, and are also supported by SEO London, a not-for-profit recruitment firm that focuses on improving access to the most competitive professions.
