6 reasons you’ll love Alpha

We believe our people deserve rewards. And we always keep one eye on the competition to make sure we’re offering just as much as (or more than) everyone else.

We want you to feel valued

You’ll get a competitive base salary. In fact, we literally check it against our competitors. And it increases every year.

If that’s not incentive enough, how about commuting allowance, pension contributions, phone expenses, and a high-end laptop?

We’re a big, profit-sharing family

Our employees are the heart and soul of the company. So you’ll get a pay out of profit share. It even goes up as you do – the more senior your role, the more you’ll receive.

When you join us, we’ll also give you an opportunity to buy shares to benefit from our growth.

Help run the business

Everyone at Alpha has extra skills. We give you the opportunity to develop your interests and talents by helping us run the business.

If you’ve got skills in anything from web design to events management, we’ll put them to use.

You can fulfil your ambitions

25 days’ holiday is a good start. We add to it with flexible working, working from home, sabbaticals, secondments, and the option to buy additional holiday.

We know “work-life balance” means different things to our employees, and whether you have dreams of backpacking across South America, or completing your Masters in Creative Writing, we will do our best to help you achieve them.

We appreciate the real you

Our welcoming and friendly culture is open to everyone.

Our Diversity and Inclusion programme is driven by our employees and is continuously evolving, to ensure we meet your individual needs and that there are no barriers to a happy career at Alpha.

What our people say

“The phrase ‘work hard play hard’ is a cliché used by many firms, but I’ve really found it to be true at Alpha; we work hard on projects and are expected to contribute to the development of the business, but we’re encouraged to have fun along the way through a packed social calendar and the pursuit of our own personal interests”

Matthew (Analyst) – London, UK

“I am regularly surprised by the amount of support and empowerment that the organisation provides to all its staff, and as a result the amount that we achieve as a team. My life since joining Alpha has been challenging, varied and exciting, exactly as I hoped it would be.”

Alex (Principal) – London, UK

“Alpha is not your usual management consultancy; it is a fun environment where I am supported as an individual, surrounded by talented friends, and appreciated for my contribution. I don’t believe anywhere else would offer me this variety and enjoyment in my work”

Samantha (Manager) – London, UK

“I joined Alpha in 2007 as the twenty first employee. Over the last 10 years I have witnessed Alpha’s transition from a small boutique advisory firm to the world’s leading global asset management consultancy – something I have been extremely proud to have played a part in. Throughout this transformation, Alpha has remained true to its core values, and continues to put the quality, wellbeing, professional development of its people at the heart of what we do.”

Stuart McNulty (UK CEO) – London, UK

“I moved to Alpha having previously worked at one of the Big 4 consultancies and immediately noticed the difference in culture. At Alpha, I am appreciated for my interests and achievements inside and outside the workplace, and feel truly supported as an individual”

Bu (Senior Manager) – London, UK

What have you been involved in outside of project work?

Probably the most exciting thing I’ve done was my recent four-month sabbatical: I raised over £9,000 for the Hands Up Foundation (who support work in and around Syria) by cycling 3,000km in 30 days through Patagonia. I also did ice hiking up Huanya Potosi – a 6,088m high mountain in Bolivia, which is higher than Everest basecamp. Going to a surf camp in Chile and Uruguay was also great fun!
Another rewarding initiative I’ve participated in was mentoring an A-level student to help them with their University / Career decisions and UCAS applications.

Finally, I’m really excited to soon be beginning a secondment to the US: I’ll be moving to Alpha’s US office for two years and working on projects across New York, Boston, Chicago and Toronto, which should be a really exciting challenge as Alpha continues to grow its presence outside of the UK!

How has Alpha supported you in these initiatives?

My sabbatical was fully supported internally; the director team and HR were incredibly understanding and helpful in making it happen. Meanwhile, the wider Alpha team helped contribute to the total amount raised for charity by sponsoring my cycling trip.

The mentoring program was offered by Alpha as part of their many CSR initiatives which many people within the firm get involved with.

The US secondment is part of an incentivised scheme proposed and managed by the Alpha director team as we look to expand across North America, and there are a few other consultants moving out there around the same time as me.

Is there anything else you’d love to do during your time at Alpha?

I’ve only just got back from sabbatical, so at the moment I’m happy settling into work again. My US secondment starts next week so I’m going to have my hands full with adjusting to a new continent!

How would you describe the culture at Alpha?

Alpha has an incredibly positive environment – there are many ways to contribute to our growth, and new ideas are always welcomed by the director team. Anyone at any level in Alpha can find an ear to discuss a potential new initiative, which could relate to social activities, to charity work, to our marketing, or to our infrastructure, the list goes on…

There is also a great understanding that people have interests outside of their everyday work, and these are actively encouraged, as shown by our prolific social calendar!

The policy of ‘keeping good people’ resonates in every decision here, which is why there is a great number of employee benefits, including a laptop, phone, and corporate health insurance, as well as the flexibility to cater for employee sabbaticals. The resulting high employee retention rate speaks for itself!

What have you been involved in outside of project work? What do you enjoy most and find rewarding?

I’m fairly active outside of Alpha – I run a small charity called the National Indian Students and Alumni Union UK, which I founded during my time at university. It is the largest forum in the UK for young people of Indian origin, who are either studying or have studied at a UK educational institution. I lead a team of 30 people who are spread across the UK and in India and primarily look after the organisational strategy and stakeholder relationships. We work with governments, NGOs and commercial organisations alike and regularly provide advisory services and thought leadership. Last year the Mayor of London commissioned us a research piece as well.

Fun fact: I recently won the UK-India Thought Leadership award for my work with the charity. The other winners included the Deputy Mayor of London! This was a pretty humbling and special moment!

How has Alpha supported you in these initiatives?

Alpha is incredible! The best thing about working in a truly entrepreneurial environment is that you are trusted to firstly be entrepreneurial and creative, and quite importantly, manage your time as you deem fit. Needless to say, our client work comes first but other than that, the amount of support we get, both for our business management pieces and our activities outside of work is tremendous. I know that I can speak to anyone at Alpha and get their thoughts and advice on anything I need, and that I will get their unbiased and honest opinions.

What has been your personal highlight of your time at Alpha?

There have been many! But delivering a very complex strategy review in an extremely tight timeframe with an incredibly happy client has to be at the top of the list. I also had the best ever time at the Alpha annual social and was so overwhelmed with just how awesome our trip to Tuscany was! Can’t wait for the next one!

Is there anything else you’d love to do during your time at Alpha (non-project)?

I am very inclined towards business development activities and would love to contribute to these more formally. There is an incredible amount of satisfaction in the sales and marketing process for any product or service, and this relies on a holistic understanding of a myriad of factors, including our industry, our clients, and their dynamic requirements.

What advice would you have for a new joiner at Alpha?

When we tell you we are an entrepreneurial company with responsibility from day 1, we’re not just saying it, we truly mean it. What that translates into for any new joiner is a wealth of opportunities for development – the sky is truly the limit at Alpha. Creativity is welcomed, both in project and outside of project work, so don’t be afraid of volunteering – it will be appreciated and you will learn so much from the amazing team. And don’t be afraid to ask any type of question – everyone is incredibly nice and understanding. You will be surprised at the amount of time everyone at Alpha is willing to invest in you.

How would you describe the culture at Alpha?

Culture doesn’t always fit in to words. It is more how you feel after being in a place for some time with like-minded people. Or how you feel after soaking up a big trip or a good book. I’d describe Alpha’s culture as taking things seriously at the right time, having fun at other times, having good conversation, being curious about new ways of thinking and about people in general, and continuing to persuade the timeless machine of our industry to run a little differently.

What have you been involved in outside of project work at Alpha?

Mostly music. I have sung in the past with a couple of high profile groups at Montreux Jazz Festival and in sell out runs of the Edinburgh Fringe. I took time out of work to run a band, to write songs and have a solo career. Highlights included big private event gigs, writing two albums, recording in Nashville and then in Liverpool at the same studio Coldplay recorded Parachutes at (yes; I like music with a ‘hook’ don’t judge!) and singing for wedding ceremonies and first dances. So in essence I was still working for clients, only my job was to make an audience dance, drink or cry!

How has Alpha supported you in these initiatives?

Alpha have been hugely supportive about my taking a career break to do music, and very welcoming when I returned to the fold. I could not have gone on as full or flexible a sabbatical at many other firms. Two of Alpha’s best were even kind enough to rally audiences for the odd gig! Ongoing discussions are afoot with Alpha’s leadership to arrange an Alpha hosted music festival in the South West one day 😉

What other fun things have you heard about people at Alpha doing?

Travelling, zorbing, jet skiing, skiing, building, playing harmonica, writing books, pottery, politics, wine making, wine tasting, wine buying, bright ideas, start-ups, growing a lot of facial hair.

What else would you love to do during your time at Alpha (non-project)?

Roll out a simple, hitherto mad idea that makes everyone’s working life smoother, more interesting or more fun. One which other firms want to copy but probably can’t. Watch this space!

Olivia
Principal & Start-up Secondee

Can you provide a quick overview of your role?

As a Principal, my role has three main areas of focus, the first and most important is delivery of major programmes. Principals often lead large and complex engagements, and can expect to be allocated 100% to a particular client project. My project delivery work has traditionally been in the operations and outsourcing space where I have led a number of strategy and execution programmes. Secondly I have responsibility for certain aspects of Alpha’s business management, I lead our PR and social media in the UK and I am currently in the process of launching season 1 of Alpha’s podcast Alpha Pulse, I also mentor four colleagues and provide support for them during their career journeys. Finally, I own the relationship that Alpha has with three key clients and I am responsible for ensuring that they understand Alpha’s proposition and will choose to use us for their change initiatives.

What do you enjoy most and find rewarding?

Alpha’s success and dynamism is really what has kept me with the firm for so long. I joined 9 years ago and each year we have exceeded our own expectations and developed our proposition in new and exciting ways. Alpha’s Director team really support all initiatives that their employees are interested in as long as they can make a case. Alpha recently supported me to take a six-month secondment to a blockchain fintech, and I hope to be able to bring back what I have learned to develop Alpha’s proposition in that area. I don’t think may other firms would be so flexible. They are also very supportive of people wishing to work abroad, and in 2012 I spent six months in the Alpha offices in NYC. Finally, Alpha consistently attracts bright, collaborative, curious employees and I love working with such a diverse and interesting team.

What can prospective candidates expect from joining at your level?

Alpha is a fantastic place to work and any Principal joining us will enjoy a great combination of interesting work, dynamic working environment and a great sociable collaborative atmosphere. In terms of training all Alpha employees undertake the IMC and Prince 2 qualifications. We also support people who wish to take CFA/CAIA exams. Alpha is very dynamic and responsive and so if there is training that someone wants to take that is not part of the standard offering there is a good chance that Alpha will support it if there is a good business case. For example, I have recently completed a certificate in Fintech at MIT. This kind of flexibility is one of the reasons I love working at Alpha.

What makes Alpha different to other firms you have worked at before?

Alpha is a fantastic place to work and it has a wonderfully dynamic and friendly culture. Alpha is constantly winning things – either “Consultant of the Year” from Funds Europe, or “Best Companies to Work For” from the Times, or new exciting Client projects, it really feels like I’m part of a winning formula. In addition, Alpha supports me in whatever I want to do, be it the Alpha Podcast, my Fintech qualification from MIT or my secondment to a blockchain firm, I don’t think any other consulting firm would be so flexible and supportive.

What are you working on at the moment?

I have recently completed a target operating model design project for a European Asset Manager. The project involved a review of the people, processes and technology from front to back. The project also involved travel to each of the client’s locations. I was leading the overall engagement with a team from our UK and Paris offices. The project ran for a total of 12 weeks and made a number of recommendations that will transform their business with a new operating model that supports their global plans.
